Keeping your dog healthy and happy can mean having to get up and take them outside multiple times per day.

For those who are busy or travel often, the responsibility of walking your dog can sometimes fall on someone else in the household, but this might not be convenient for you or your canine companion.

That’s why it’s important to know about the benefits of walking your dog, so you can be sure that they’re getting enough activity every day even if you don’t have time to walk them yourself!

 

Get your body moving

Dog walking not only keeps your pup healthy and happy but can also provide you with health benefits. The more time people spend outdoors, the lower their risk for obesity, diabetes, depression, and high blood pressure.

A brisk 30-minute walk each day can reduce a person’s risk for all those health conditions by as much as 50%. Plus there’s the bonus of getting to spend quality time with your pet while getting in some exercise!

If you don’t have the space or time to commit to dog walking on a regular basis, try alternating it with another form of exercises such as jogging or biking.

You’ll be surprised at how quickly an evening stroll will turn into an hour workout without even noticing! And if you’re new to exercising, start out slow and then gradually increase the length of your walks.

It may take some planning ahead, but it’ll be worth it in the end when you feel healthier and happier!

 

Improve your relationship with your pet

Dog walking is an excellent way to have a bonding experience with your canine best friend, but it also provides health benefits for both of you.

From lower cholesterol and reduced blood pressure to strengthening your dog’s muscles and joints–dog walking does more than just give them the opportunity to use the bathroom outside instead of on your carpet.

It’s a great chance for you both to get exercise, too! Simply letting your pup roam around the house all day doesn’t provide the same physical activity they need to stay healthy.

We suggest at least 30 minutes of exercise per day but can be up to 90 minutes if needed. You’ll notice an improvement in their behavior and attitude as well as yours if you stick with this routine!

Be sure to bring water, treats, and a leash every time you take your dog out. Some dogs may not be good about staying close so make sure to only go on leashed walks until he gets used to being near or attached to you.

 

Get out into nature

I live in a big city, but I love to take my dog to the park as often as possible. You get a really great workout, and you are getting your dog some much-needed exercise too.

When we’re done with our walk, it is amazing how much less stressed he feels than when we started. It’s like a power nap for him, but with you! So walking your dog is not only good for their physical health–it’s good for yours too!

If you don’t have access to an outside space where your dog can roam free, or if there are times when they just need some peace and quiet indoors, then a chew toy can do wonders.

For example, one of my favorite chew toys is an antler because it satisfies my dog’s need to chew without leaving any marks on furniture or rugs.

They also last much longer than most chew toys, so this investment will last for years. Antlers are super popular right now and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so be sure to find one that suits your pup best.

 

Mental health benefits

Not only is walking your dog a good way to work off pent-up energy, but it’s also a perfect way to relieve stress and have quality bonding time with your canine.

When you need an excuse for some downtime, take the pressure off yourself by putting it on Fido. Getting out into nature with your pup can do wonders for mental health.

If you don’t want to head outside, try playing games or giving him a treat puzzle that requires him to use his nose in order to retrieve treats (great for those pups who are getting fat!).

Or give them some rope toys and see how long they’ll keep themselves entertained! Mental benefits aside, there are physical benefits as well.

While you’re not lifting any heavy objects or sweating profusely, you’re still getting your heart rate up and moving around.

Additionally, all that fresh air will help boost immunity, leading to better health overall. In other words: It’s a win-win situation!

 

Increase mental alertness

Do you find yourself feeling a little slower in the day when your dog has not been able to go for its morning walk? Well, it may not be because of your pet’s lack of activity, but rather because you haven’t gotten enough movement.

Studies have shown that people who walk their dogs are more mentally alert and don’t have a dip in energy during the afternoon. They’re also less likely to develop depression or anxiety!

And they experience increased well-being! Decrease stress: A study by Colorado State University found that participants who walked their dogs had lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) afterward than those who did not walk with their pups.

Researchers think this is because pets offer companionship and mental stimulation to human beings. And what could make life better than spending time with your best friend while getting some fresh air?

Keep the weight down: Just like humans, we can put on weight when we eat too much or exercise too little. The same thing goes for our furry friends!

Studies show that people who walk their dogs are 40% more likely to meet the CDC guidelines for physical activity, which keeps them at a healthy weight.

 

Stress relief

Walking a dog can help lower your stress levels and improve your mood. The act of walking is therapeutic, but it also helps stimulate serotonin production in the brain, which makes you feel better emotionally.

Along with releasing endorphins, which make you feel good too. Dogs need to walk at least once a day to stay healthy, so be sure to get yours out for some exercise.

It’s not just about having a companion on walks either- dogs benefit from this exercise too! Dogs that are walked regularly live an average of two years longer than those who don’t.

One study found that every hour spent walking per week reduces the risk of death by 22%. Walking outside (or even in an enclosed area) gives your pup fresh air, room to roam around, and a break from confinement. 

Dogs are social creatures and love spending time with other pups when they’re out for a walk!
